BERNARD BUFFET

BIOGRAPHIE

Bernard Buffet was born on July 10, 1928, in Paris, France. He showed an early interest in art and, at the age of 15, enrolled in the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris. His early years were marked by financial difficulties, but he quickly made a name for himself with his remarkable talent.

Buffet soon gained recognition for his unique and identifiable style, characterized by angular lines and dark colors. In 1948, at just 20 years old, he won the Prix de la Critique, earning him significant recognition. His works, often imbued with melancholy, depicted urban scenes, still lifes, and human figures with marked emotional intensity.

His expressionist and figurative style contrasted with the dominant abstraction of the time, earning him both fervent admirers and harsh critics. Despite this, he achieved significant commercial success, exhibiting his works in prestigious galleries worldwide.

Today, Bernard Buffet is recognized as one of the most important artists of the 20th century in France. His work, which includes thousands of paintings, is housed in numerous museums and private collections around the world. A museum dedicated to his work, the Bernard Buffet Museum, is located in Surugadaira, Japan, attesting to his international influence.

Bernard Buffet left a lasting impact on the art world with his distinctive style and poignant representations of the human condition. Despite the ups and downs of his career, his artistic legacy continues to fascinate and inspire new generations of viewers and artists.
